(Adveṣa)
(Adveṣa)
Adveṣa(無瞋):梵文 a-(否定字首「無」)+ dveṣa(瞋恚、憎恨,源自 √dviṣ「憎惡」)。
Non-hatred / Non-aversion(無瞋):non- + hatred/aversion。
Never had the merchant, who for years had nursed a grudge against the neighbor that had once ruined his name, imagined that, on the night when the same neighbor lay ill and abandoned, he would kneel beside him, wash his feverish face, and feel, where hatred had long burned, only a quiet goodwill, so that the old wound closed, the words he had rehearsed fell silent, and his heart, once narrow as a clenched fist, opened like a field after rain.
Never had the merchant,
who for years had nursed a grudge
against the neighbor
that had once ruined his name,
imagined
that, on the night when the same neighbor lay ill and abandoned,
he would kneel beside him,
wash his feverish face,
and feel,
where hatred had long burned,
only a quiet goodwill,
so that the old wound closed,
the words he had rehearsed fell silent,
and his heart,
once narrow as a clenched fist,
opened like a field after rain.
The merchant never imagined that he would kneel beside the neighbor.
He had nursed a grudge against the neighbor for years.
The neighbor had once ruined his name.
The neighbor lay ill and abandoned that night.
He would kneel beside him.
He would wash his feverish face.
He would feel only a quiet goodwill.
Hatred had long burned in his heart.
The old wound closed.
The words he had rehearsed fell silent.
His heart had been narrow as a clenched fist.
(once narrow as a clenched fist 為插入語,as 引導明喻。)
His heart opened like a field after rain.
who 與 that 關係子句:
who for years had nursed a grudge 修飾 merchant;that had once ruined his name 修飾 neighbor,兩者層層交代怨恨的背景。
imagined 之後的 that 子句中,on the night when...
where 插入子句與 so that 結果子句:
where hatred had long burned so that 之後三個並列子句(closed / fell silent / opened)表示結果。once narrow as a clenched fist 為插入語,與 like a field after rain 構成前後對比。
時態階梯: 過去完成(had nursed, had once ruined, had long burned)、過去視角的未來(would kneel / wash / feel)、過去結果(closed / fell silent / opened)。
核心字彙: grudge(怨恨)、nurse(懷抱,心中醞釀)、abandoned(被遺棄的)、feverish(發燒的)、goodwill(善意)、rehearse(預先演練)、clenched(握緊的)。
