Apiculture
Apiculture
Apiculture(養蜂業)由拉丁文 apis(「蜜蜂」)加上 cultura(「耕種、培養」)組成,十九世紀進入英語,字面意為「蜜蜂的飼養」。
Rarely did farmers appreciate that apiculture, which involves the careful management of hives to obtain honey and beeswax as well as to rent colonies for pollinating orchards and fields, is valued less for the sweetness it yields than for the unseen pollination on which so many crops depend, until declining bee populations, if left unchecked, threatened harvests that had always seemed secure.
Rarely did farmers appreciate that apiculture,
which involves the careful management of hives to obtain honey and beeswax as well as to rent colonies for pollinating orchards and fields,
is valued less for the sweetness it yields than for the unseen pollination on which so many crops depend,
until declining bee populations,
if left unchecked,
threatened harvests
that had always seemed secure.
Farmers rarely appreciated something.
Apiculture involves the careful management of hives.
The management obtains honey and beeswax.
The management also rents colonies for pollinating orchards and fields.
(as well as to rent 與前一目的並列;for pollinating 為「介詞+動名詞」,表用途。)
Apiculture is valued less for the sweetness than for the pollination.
(less A than B 表「與其看重 A,不如看重 B」;is valued 為被動語態。)
Apiculture yields the sweetness.
(the sweetness it yields 省略了關係代名詞 that,it 回指 apiculture。)
Many crops depend on the pollination.
(on which 為「介詞+關係代名詞」結構,由 depend on 拆出。)
The pollination is unseen.
Declining bee populations threatened harvests.
The bee populations are left unchecked.
(if left unchecked 為省略「主詞+be」的條件子句。)
The harvests had always seemed secure.
Rarely
Rarely did farmers appreciate 以否定副詞置句首,助動詞 did 移到主詞 farmers 之前,語氣比 Farmers rarely appreciated 更強。
which 非限定子句與 as well as:
apiculture, which involves ... to obtain honey and beeswax as well as to rent colonies 以 as well as 把「取得產品」與「出租授粉服務」兩個不定詞目的並列,說明養蜂業不只賣蜂蜜。for pollinating orchards and fields
less ... than 比較結構與 on which 關係子句:
is valued less for the sweetness it yields than for the unseen pollination 以 less A than B 作價值翻轉:被看重的程度,甜味較低,授粉較高。the sweetness it yields 省略了關係代名詞 that,這是限定關係子句中受格關係代名詞常見的省略。on which so many crops depend 以「介詞+which」取代 which ... on,語氣較正式,現在式 depend 說明依賴是持續的現況。
if left unchecked 夾在主詞 populations 與謂語 threatened 之間,為 if they are left unchecked 的省略,省略了「主詞+be」,they 指 bee populations。
that had always seemed secure:
