Horticulture
Horticulture
Horticulture(園藝)由拉丁文 hortus(「園、圍起來的園地」,與 garden 同源)加上 cultura(「耕種、培養」)組成,十七世紀進入英語,字面意為「園地的栽培」。
Not until growers recognized that horticulture, which encompasses the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants on a scale intensive enough to demand skill rather than mere acreage, is as much a discipline of patient observation as a branch of primary agriculture, did small household gardens begin yielding harvests that, if managed with care for soil and water, could sustain whole families while preserving the land that nourished them.
Not until growers recognized that horticulture,
which encompasses the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants on a scale intensive enough to demand skill rather than mere acreage,
is as much a discipline of patient observation as a branch of primary agriculture,
did small household gardens begin yielding harvests
that, if managed with care for soil and water,
could sustain whole families
while preserving the land that nourished them.
Growers recognized something.
(Not until 置句首,後面的主句倒裝為 did gardens begin;recognized 後接 that 名詞子句。)
Horticulture encompasses the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants.
The cultivation is on a scale intensive enough to demand skill.
The cultivation demands skill rather than mere acreage.
Horticulture is as much a discipline of patient observation as a branch of primary agriculture.
(as much A as B 表「既是 A,也同樣是 B」。)
Small household gardens began yielding harvests.
The harvests are managed with care for soil and water.
The harvests could sustain whole families.
The gardens preserve the land.
The land nourished the families.
(that nourished them 為限定關係子句,修飾 the land。)
Not until
Not until growers recognized ... did small household gardens begin 以否定詞組 Not until 置句首,主句必須倒裝,助動詞 did 移到主詞 gardens 之前,意思是「直到……
which 非限定子句與 enough to:
horticulture, which encompasses ... which 子句內,on a scale intensive enough to demand skill 以「形容詞+enough to」說明規模集約到足以要求技術,rather than mere acreage 再以對比點出園藝重技術而非單靠面積,這也是它與大田農業的差別。
as much ... as 並列結構:
is as much a discipline of patient observation as a branch of primary agriculture as much A as B 不是比較誰較多,而是強調 A 與 B 同樣成立,且 A 常是作者想特別強調的一面。
did ... begin yielding 與 that 關係子句:
主句核心為 did small household gardens begin yielding harvests, begin 後接動名詞 yielding。harvests that ... could sustain 中,關係代名詞 that 代替 harvests 作子句主詞,而 if managed with care for soil and water 夾在 that 與 could 之間,把條件放進關係子句內部,使 that 到 could 之間隔了一段插入語,閱讀時要先記住主詞 that,等到 could sustain 才連得上。
if managed 為 if they are managed 的省略,省略了「主詞+be」,其中 they 指 harvests(亦可理解為 gardens)。with care for soil and water 說明管理的方式,care for 後接兩個並列名詞,提示永續經營必須同時顧及土壤與水。
while preserving 分詞構句與 the land that nourished them:
could sustain whole families while preserving the land the land that nourished them 中,that 引導限定關係子句,them 回指 families,並以過去式 nourished 把土地過去滋養人的事實,與前面「保護它」的現在行動連成一線,形成「人養土地,土地也養人」的循環結尾。
