Semantics
Semantics
經法語 sémantique(由 Michel Bréal 於 1883 年左右用於語言意義研究)進入英語(約 19 世紀末),取代較早的 semasiology。
Although traditional lexicographers and classical philosophers, focusing mainly on dictionary definitions, lexical senses and the correspondence of words to external referents, often treated semantics as a static inventory of fixed meanings derived from authoritative usage or logical analysis, modern formal and cognitive linguists, who developed rigorous models of compositional meaning, truth-conditional interpretation and conceptual structures in the twentieth century while investigating cross-linguistic patterns of sense extension and underspecification, demonstrated that the interpretive principles governing reference, predication and discourse coherence constituted a dynamic, context-sensitive system of knowledge, a perspective that later scholars, valuing formal precision and empirical psychological evidence, regarded as central theoretical inquiry, not merely a catalogue of isolated word senses or arbitrary conventional associations bound to a single cultural tradition.
