Sericulture（養蠶業）由拉丁文 sericum（「絲」，源自希臘文 sērikos，「賽里斯人的、絲的」）加上 cultura（「耕種、培養」）組成，十九世紀進入英語，字面意為「絲的培育」。現代用法指人類飼養家蠶、種植桑樹以餵食幼蟲，最後取得蠶繭並繅製成蠶絲的產業，也包括蠶種的繁育與蠶蛹的利用。養蠶業屬於廣義的畜牧與農業，與紡織業關係密切，因為蠶絲是歷史上最重要的天然纖維之一。中文譯為「養蠶業」。
