Sociology

Sociology

Socio- 來自拉丁文 socius(夥伴、同伴),經 socialis(社會的、群居的)進入英語;同源詞有 society(社會)、social(社會的)、socioeconomic(社會經濟的)、associate(結交、同事)。-logy 來自希臘文 -logia(學問、論述),源於 logos(言詞、理性、規律);同源詞有 psychology(心理學)、anthropology(人類學)、biology(生物學)、logic(邏輯)。

它通常作為不可數名詞使用;談及「作為一門學術學科」時直接用 Sociology(常大寫),談及特定領域的社會學研究時則用小寫 sociology(例如 the sociology of education 教育社會學)。

Sociology, which scholars practice by analyzing the patterns that group interactions reveal, the structures that cultural norms form, and the inequalities that power dynamics create, explores not merely how individuals behave but why communities fracture within environments that restrict equal access, so that reformers propose structural solutions, while skeptics, who doubt that statistical models reflect human emotion, argue that quantitative data can flatten distinct individual narratives.

Sociology,

which scholars practice

by analyzing

the patterns that group interactions reveal,

the structures that cultural norms form,

and the inequalities that power dynamics create,

explores

not merely how individuals behave

but why communities fracture

within environments

that restrict equal access,

so that reformers propose structural solutions,

while skeptics,

who doubt that statistical models reflect human emotion,

argue

that quantitative data can flatten distinct individual narratives.

Sociology explores something.

Scholars practice sociology.

Scholars analyze the patterns, the structures, and the inequalities.

Group interactions reveal the patterns.

Cultural norms form the structures.

Power dynamics create the inequalities.

Individuals behave somehow.

(not merely how individuals behave 為 explores 的第一個受詞;how 引導名詞子句;behave 表「行為、舉止」。)

Communities fracture for some reasons.

Communities fracture within environments.

(within 表「在……

Environments restrict equal access.

Reformers propose structural solutions.

Skeptics doubt something.

Statistical models reflect human emotion.

Skeptics argue something.

(argue that ...

Quantitative data can flatten distinct individual narratives.

Sociology, which scholars practice by analyzing the patterns that group interactions reveal, the structures that cultural norms form, and the inequalities that power dynamics create, explores ...

子句中的三個 that 都是限定關係代名詞,分別指 patterns、structures 與 inequalities,並且都在各自的子句中作動詞受詞:group interactions reveal the patterns、cultural norms form the structures、power dynamics create the inequalities。

2. not merely ... but ...

主幹 explores not merely how individuals behave but why communities fracture within environments that restrict equal access 使用 not merely A but B(不只 A,更是 B)的對比結構。第一個受詞是 how individuals behave,由疑問副詞 how 引導的名詞子句;第二個受詞是 why communities fracture within environments ...,由 why 引導的名詞子句。

so that reformers propose structural solutions

4. while 對比子句、who 限定子句與 that 名詞子句

while skeptics, who doubt that statistical models reflect human emotion, argue that quantitative data can flatten distinct individual narratives 中,while 引出對比:社會學致力於提出結構解方,但懷疑者則強調量化研究的局限。who doubt that ...

Sociology explores something.

Scholars practice sociology.

Scholars analyze the patterns, the structures, and the inequalities.

Group interactions reveal the patterns.

Cultural norms form the structures.

Power dynamics create the inequalities.

Individuals behave somehow.

Communities fracture for some reasons.

Communities fracture within environments.

Environments restrict equal access.

Reformers propose structural solutions.

Skeptics doubt something.

Statistical models reflect human emotion.

Skeptics argue something.

Quantitative data can flatten distinct individual narratives.

先用 which scholars practice by analyzing ...

用 explores not merely how individuals ... but why communities ...

用 so that reformers propose ...

最後用 while skeptics, who doubt that ..., argue that ...
